Increase of spin-transfer torque threshold current density in coupled vortex domain walls

چکیده
We have studied the dependence on domain wall structure of the spin-transfer torque current density threshold for the onset of wall motion in curved, Gd-doped Ni80Fe20 nanowires with no artificial pinning potentials. For single vortex domain walls, both for 10% and 1% Gd doping concentrations, the threshold current density is inversely proportional to the wire width and significantly lower compared to the threshold current density measured for transverse domain walls. On the other hand for high Gd concentrations and large wire widths, double vortex domain walls are formed which require an increase in the threshold current density compared to single vortex domain walls at the same wire width. We suggest that this is due to the coupling of the vortex cores, which are of opposite chirality, and hence will be acted on by opposing forces arising through the spin-transfer torque effect.

The alphabet of spin in nanostructures
In a ferromagnetic nanostructure, a domain wall is a transition region that separates two different but uniformly magnetized regions. Moving a domain wall with an electrical current instead of a magnetic field is of great appeal to researchers; it could lead to spin-based devices in which information is stored and processed in domain walls. Such storage, memory, and logic devices could potentia...
متن کاملEmergence of Huge Negative Spin-Transfer Torque in Atomically Thin Co layers.
Current-induced domain wall motion has drawn great attention in recent decades as the key operational principle of emerging magnetic memory devices. As the major driving force of the motion, the spin-orbit torque on chiral domain walls has been proposed and is currently extensively studied. However, we demonstrate here that there exists another driving force, which is larger than the spin-orbit...
متن کاملDetection of current-induced resonance of geometrically confined domain walls.
Magnetic domain walls are found to exhibit quasiparticle behavior when subjected to geometrical variations. Because of the spin torque effect such a quasiparticle in a potential well is excited by an ac current leading to a dip in the depinning field at resonance for current densities as low as 2 x 10(10) A/m2. Independently the resonance frequencies of transverse walls and vortex walls are det...
متن کاملRelationship between nonadiabaticity and damping in permalloy studied by current induced spin structure transformations.
By direct imaging we determine spin structure changes in Permalloy wires and disks due to spin transfer torque as well as the critical current densities for different domain wall types. Periodic domain wall transformations from transverse to vortex walls and vice versa are observed, and the transformation mechanism occurs by vortex core displacement perpendicular to the wire. The results imply ...
متن کاملCurrent Induced Vortex Wall Dynamics in Helical Magnetic Systems
Nontrivial topology of interfaces separating phases with opposite chirality in helical magnetic metals result in new effects as they interact with spin polarized current. These interfaces or vortex walls consist of a one dimensional array of vortex lines. We predict that adiabatic transfer of angular momentum between vortex array and spin polarized current will result in topological Hall effect...
